The McNears Paddleboard Race is located at McNears Beach Park in San Rafael. The four mile triangle course starts and finishes on the quarter-mile long sandy beach and goes around the islands off Pt. San Pedro and China Camp State Beach. Registration for the McNears beach race begins at 8:00 am and the race starts at 9:00 am. The $10 registration fee includes the park entrance fee for the race. There are prize packages for the winners, courtesy of Demo Sport in San Rafael.
Race divisions are broken down by gender, age, and type of craft. The divisions will include womens & mens, under 18 & over 18:
Elite class (under 12’6”)
14’ class (12’6” to 14’)
Open class (over 14’)
Entry fee: Adults, $10, Minors, $5. Each entry includes free parking, informal BBQ lunch and give away items.
Parking: Registration fee includes McNears Park entrance fee. Race will commence toward left side of lot on beach past snack shack.
Heats: Appropriate heats will be determined as we receive entry forms. Juniors will depart 5 minutes in advance of adults.
Please keep track of personal gear as we will not be responsible for any lost items. It’s a good idea to label your personal belongings.
Water safety will be provided by Marin County Parks and Demo Sport.
At the start of the race:
Each competitor must check in with the registration table to paddle. Racers will receive a competition number, the appropriate heat start time and other important race information. There will be an aerial map of the course so racers can plan their approach. Next to the map will be a set of race rules and information. Please read this list! There will also be a pre-hab table with water and sunscreen.
During the race:
Islands will act as natural terrain features for course markers. Paddlers will head south past (around not through) the pier toward the “sisters” past around both sisters, head north toward “Rat Island” off China Camp, around Rat Island, back toward McNears Beach staying outside the 3 swim zone buoys and back to the beach.
At the end of the race:
Each racer must round the last buoy with their left shoulder, and cross the finish line with their craft. Please do not leave any boards in the finish line area! Times will be made available for each racer at the conclusion of the race. An award ceremony will take place after the lunch. The winner of each heat will be presented with a Shore to Shore trophy.
An informal BBQ lunch will be provided by Marin County Parks, Demo Sport and Surfrider Marin at 11:00a for all competitors. Spectators are invited to join for a suggested donation.
The award ceremony and after race BBQ will be held in the central picnic area in front of the snack shack
